Construction jobs added in September

Employment in the construction industry rose by 20,000 in September, after showing little change over the prior 6 months, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.


The report had been delayed as a result of the partial government shutdown.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 148,000 in September, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 7.2 percent. Employment increased in construction, wholesale trade, and transportation and warehousing.

Employment in wholesale trade rose by 16,000 in September. Over the prior 12 months, this industry added an average of 7,000 jobs per month.

Transportation and warehousing added 23,000 jobs in September. Most of the increase occurred in transit and ground passenger transportation (+18,000).

Manufacturers added 2,000 jobs during the month, compared to 13,000 the month before.
