NAM responds to government shutdown solution

After Congress passed a bill ending the 16-day government shutdown and increasing the country’s borrowing authority, the National Association of Manufacturers called on elected officials to work together.

“Today’s agreement avoided immediate economic catastrophe, but President Obama and Congress have done nothing to address the underlying causes of our serious fiscal problems," said NAM president and CEO Jay Timmons. "All that is guaranteed is that we will find ourselves in this situation again in a few months. The President and Congress must find a way to work together—to avoid bringing us so close to default and meet the responsibilities placed on them by the American people. Manufacturers need Washington to implement reforms that will address our broken tax code and massive entitlement costs to help our nation avoid such brinksmanship in the future.

He added that policymakers must put a pro-growth, pro-jobs agenda ahead of the partisanship and gridlock. "It’s time for the President and Congress to send a message to manufacturers—we will put the economic health of the United States first,” Timmons said.
