Factory jobs inched higher in July

The nation's factories added just 6,000 jobs during the month of July according to the latest monthly jobs report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.


Within the industry, employment in motor vehicles and parts rose by 9,000 in July, but that was offset by a loss of 2,000 jobs among nondurable goods manufacturers.

Employment in other major industries, including mining and logging, construction, transportation and warehousing, and government,showed little change in July.

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 162,000 in July, and the unemployment rate edged down to 7.4 percent.
