Factory orders rise in May

New orders at U.S. factories increased 2.1 percent to $485 billion in May according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

This followed a 1.3 percent April increase. Manufactured goods orders have increased for three of the last four months. The gains suggest that manufacturing may be picking up after a weak start to the year.

Most of the gain was from increased demand for aircraft, but businesses also ordered more machinery, computers and household appliances.

Shipments increased 1.0 percent during the month to $483.6 billion. This followed a 0.7 percent April decrease.
