Durable goods orders increase

New orders for manufactured durable goods increased 3.6 percent in May to $231.0 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced.

The increased in May followed a 3.6 percent gain in April.

Most of the increase was due to a surge in commercial aircraft orders, which tend to fluctuate sharply from month to month. Businesses also ordered more computers, communications equipment, machinery and metals.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods increased 1.2 percent to $229.7 billion. This followed a 0.6 percent April decrease.
