ISM: Manufacturing expands for 22nd month

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded in May for the 22nd consecutive month.

The Institute for Supply Management's Manufacturing ISM Report On Business showed the PMI registered 53.5 percent, a decrease of 6.9 percentage points when compared to April's reading of 60.4 percent. A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding; below 50 percent indicates that it is generally contracting.

"Slower growth in new orders and production are the primary contributors to this month's lower PMI reading," said Bradley J. Holcomb, CPSM, CPSD, chair of the Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. "Manufacturing employment continues to show good momentum for the year, as the Employment Index registered 58.2 percent, which is 4.5 percentage points lower than the 62.7 percent reported in April. Manufacturers continue to experience significant cost pressures from commodities and other inputs."
