Manufacturing contracted for fourth straight month

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in January for the fourth consecutive month.

The Institute for Supply Management reported that its monthly index registered at 48.2 percent in January, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the seasonally adjusted December reading of 48 percent.

A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding; below 50 percent indicates that it is generally contracting

The New Orders Index registered 51.5 percent, an increase of 2.7 percentage points from the seasonally adjusted reading of 48.8 percent in December. The Employment Index registered 45.9 percent, 2.1 percentage points below the seasonally adjusted December reading of 48 percent.
